The Federation actively advances cross-border collaboration, inviting designers, scholars, and enterprises to participate in building an international platform for the qipao. Beyond cultural promotion, the Federation also focuses on women’s social status and professional growth, encouraging members to discover self-worth through the art of the qipao and using it as a bridge to facilitate cultural exchange between East and West.
Through continuous effort, the International Women’s Qipao Federation is bringing the spirit of the qipao onto the world stage, enabling more people to recognize and appreciate this unique cultural heritage.
Historical Development
Origins
The origins of the qipao can be traced back to the clothing of Manchu women during the Qing dynasty. At that time, the qipao was known as “qiren fu” (Manchu attire). Its design was wide and straight, with loose cuffs and hems, emphasizing a dignified and solemn appearance. This style of dress was not only everyday wear but also a symbol of identity and ethnic distinction. Under Qing rule, the qipao gradually became one of the principal garments for women.
Evolution During the Republican Era
With the advent of the Republican era, society and culture gradually opened up, and the qipao began to incorporate elements of Han Chinese clothing while also being influenced by Western tailoring techniques. During this period, the qipao underwent notable improvements:
Waist-fitting design
Highlighted the beauty of the female silhouette, showcasing elegance and grace.
Shortened sleeves and hemline
Made the garment more suitable for urban life and easier for movement.
Variety of materials
Silk, satin, cotton, and linen were widely used, often enhanced with embroidery and printed patterns.
The qipao became a fashionable symbol for urban women of the time. In particular, Shanghai saw the qipao rise to prominence, standing alongside Western-style dresses as one of the most popular choices for women’s attire.
The Golden Age of Qipao Culture
The qipao first gained popularity in the 1920s among women of Shanghai’s upper class. Through cultural exchange, it spread to Hong Kong, where the presence of foreign communities led to the qipao being regarded as “the representative attire of Chinese women.” It became a fashionable symbol for urban women, serving not only as everyday clothing but also as an emblem of identity, taste, and culture. Many film stars and socialites appeared in qipao, making it a hallmark of feminine elegance and modernity.
To this day, the qipao retains an important role in weddings, celebrations, and cultural occasions. Especially in Hong Kong and overseas Chinese communities, the qipao continues to stand as a symbol of cultural identity and the preservation of tradition.
